Truro Cathedral will glow green later this month as part of a global campaign to raise awareness of mitochondrial disease.
On Saturday, September 19 from 7pm to 9pm, the cathedral will take part in Light Up for Mito, an international initiative marking World Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week.
The illumination is being organised by The Noah Jordan Foundation, a Cornish charity supporting children and families affected by paediatric mitochondrial disease.
Mitochondrial disease – often shortened to mito – occurs when the mitochondria, the parts of our cells responsible for producing energy, fail to work properly. Because mitochondria are present in nearly every cell, the disease can affect almost any organ, and symptoms vary widely from person to person.
Although mito can occur at any age, it is frequently diagnosed in babies and young children. For some, the condition can be life‑limiting.

Green is recognised worldwide as the colour of mitochondrial disease awareness, symbolising hope, support and solidarity for the mito community. By lighting Truro Cathedral, The Noah Jordan Foundation hopes to bring the condition into the public eye and highlight the urgent need for greater understanding, research and support.
On Saturday, September 19, The Noah Jordan Foundation team will be at the cathedral throughout the evening and welcome anyone who would like to learn more about mitochondrial disease or the charity’s work.
