Aviation enthusiasts at RAF St Mawgan have enjoyed a packed and unusually varied week of activity, with everything from vintage warbirds to heavy‑lift helicopters making appearances over the Cornish skies.
The week began with a rare treat as the Spitfire and P‑51 Mustang from FlyaSpitfire.com completed their final day of passenger flights at Cornwall Airport Newquay on Monday.
Personnel on station were treated to the unmistakable sound of the iconic engines throughout the day - a highlight many described as a genuine pleasure. The aircraft had been operating flights all week, and hopes are already high for a return visit next year.
Activity remained brisk as RAF A400M crews carried out routine training sorties, joined briefly by a Belgian Air Force A400M that dropped in during the week.
To round things off, RAF St Mawgan hosted two CH‑47 Chinooks from No. 28 (AC) Squadron at RAF Benson, which were on exercise in Cornwall for several days.
During their stay, the crew welcomed cadets from the current Air Cadets summer camp for a hands‑on tour of the aircraft on the pan. They later took a group of station personnel on a training sortie along the Cornish coast - a memorable opportunity for those who had never worked with the Chinook force before.
The distinctive thrum of the twin‑rotor helicopters proved a fitting finale to a week that showcased the full spectrum of aviation activity at the station.
