Duke of Cornwall’s Award 2023 Goes to Treleague Dairy

The Duke of Cornwall’s Award is an annual competition for farm diversification in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, celebrating successful diversification enterprises from their core agricultural activities.

Treleague Dairy began in 2015 as a direct response to the decrease in the national milk price. As a family they felt that if they could sell milk directly to the customer they may get a price worthy of the high quality product they produced.

It started with two 15 litre pasteurisers on the kitchen worktop has now grown to two 250 litre machines to provide an average of 2000 litres a week, and now employs six local people.

They bottle around 99.5% into glass bottles, and was a main focus to ensure that they used returnable and reusable materials. (Plastic bottles are only available on request).

As the project progressed, the family opened a farm shop in their yard, painting it black and white for that Friesian design.

This is the base where their milk is sold along with a range of locally produced products such as beef and vegetable from farmers in the area.

Treleague Dairy have also started a milk round in their local area with their own van, also painted up with the Friesian design, delivery to local people and shops.

Each bottle has a £1 deposit, so residents and shop owners are encouraged to wash and return the bottles.

It’s not just milk that they produce but also other dairy products such as clotted and double cream, and have even starting making ice cream, inventing over 30 flavours of ice cream and sorbets, which are currently being sold at three nearby beach cafes.

There is now newly renovated food truck in the yard that offers breakfasts and cream teas to customers in the summer and young people from the village are employed to help in the shop on weekends and in school holidays.

The aim is that Treleague Dairy will help to ensure the viability of Treleague Farm into the future.

Presented by RCAA Show President, Mrs Alexandra Bolitho, representative from Treleague Dairy received their trophy and certificate, signed by HRH The Duke of Cornwall, in the Main Ring at the Royal Cornwall Show.
