YMCA Cornwall is today launching its Winter Appeal, helping to keep young people safe, warm and off the streets during the colder months.

The appeal comes as rising rents, a shortage of affordable housing, increasing living costs and limited accommodation options continue to leave many young people across Cornwall at risk of homelessness.

As part of the campaign, YMCA Cornwall will host a 12 Days of Christmas programme of fundraising events, giving people a fun and meaningful way to support young people facing homelessness this winter. . The programme includes a Christmas Quiz, Sea Dip, Wreath Making Workshop, Carol Service, Community Carol Singalong, Cream Tea and Business Networking event.

Chris, who knows what it feels like to be homeless in cold weather, said: “I never imagined I’d end up sleeping in a tent. In winter, it was freezing. Every night I worried about where I was going to go. Having my own place now at YMCA Cornwall has changed my life.”

Faye Edwardes, Managing Director of YMCA Cornwall, said: “Cornwall may be a popular holiday destination, but there’s a side of Cornwall that many people don’t see. There are young people facing homelessness - sleeping in unsafe places, sofa surfing or struggling to find somewhere affordable to live. Winter can be particularly difficult and dangerous for those at risk.

“Every donation to our Winter Appeal helps provide safe accommodation, practical support and the skills young people need to grow towards independent living.”

Funds raised through the Winter Appeal will help YMCA Cornwall continue providing safe housing, support services, practical activities and essential resources for young people who have nowhere else to go.
