RNAS Culdrose has raised an incredible £1,500 for a charity which helps children with cancer. The funds raised will now go to the Albie Sugden Foundation, which was set up in memory of Albie, who passed away in 2023 aged just two years old.
Cash was raised at a ‘sports appreciation dinner’ at Culdrose in Helston for more than 100 people - the idea of Natalie Hall, the wife of the air station’s commanding officer, Captain James Hall.
Families were invited for a three‑course meal at the Warrant Officers’ and Senior Rates’ Mess, which included a charity auction and raffle.
Mrs Hall said: “The dinner was arranged to include those who support various sporting achievements, not least the families and friends of those who competed in numerous events over the past 12 months.
“Without the support of those behind the scenes, many of these outstanding achievements would not have been possible.
“It also provided an opportunity to raise funds for a unique charity, the Albie Sugden Foundation, recognising where young children and families may suffer from unexpected events which can change the lives of those involved.
“The charity supports children living with cancer, and funds research into brain tumours.”

The promotion of sports is something the armed forces are passionate about, as it encourages teamwork, commitment and professionalism among personnel.
Top‑level sports, such as football or rugby, are semi‑professional and require long periods away from home, either on training or tour. In the Royal Navy, sailors will also spend periods at sea during their normal service, and all this can have a big impact on family life.
Warrant Officer Smith said: “The idea of a special dinner was a great concept and a really nice way to say thanks to families. It’s not something we’ve done before, and it was very rewarding to see it a success.”
