Cornwall coastguards were treated to a sweet surprise on Sunday when a local café delivered refreshments after the team attended an incident at The Lizard.
A man had to be winched to safety on Sunday afternoon after becoming stuck while climbing rocks at Polpeor Cove. Coastguard crews were tasked to the scene and worked with helicopter teams to bring the climber to safety.
Porthoustock Coastguard Rescue Team was paged at around lunchtime on September 27, alongside their flank team Mullion Coastguard Rescue Team, following reports that the man had climbed partway up the cliff and was unable to get back down.
Due to the casualty’s precarious position, the Coastguard helicopter was tasked to the scene. Aircrew were able to manoeuvre into the cove and safely winch the man down to secure ground, where he was checked over and confirmed to be unharmed.
After the rescue, volunteers were met with an unexpected gesture of thanks. Staff at Wavecrest Café treated the teams to coffee, cream teas and scones, praising their swift response and the successful outcome.

In a message shared on Facebook, Wavecrest said: “A big thank you to the coastguard team who came down to Lizard Point today to rescue a man stuck on the cliff. The rescue was a success and the man is okay.”
Porthoustock Coastguard Rescue Team also thanked Wavecrest for their hospitality, calling it a “generous supply of coffee and cream teas” and sharing its appreciation to everyone involved.

The Coastguard is reminding anyone visiting the coastline to take care around cliffs and rocky areas, and to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if they see someone in difficulty.
