With thousands of people expected to arrive in Newquay over the coming days, Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue Team is reminding visitors of key coastal safety tips to help ensure everyone enjoys a safe and memorable weekend.
A series of events will take place in and around the town this week, with the official Boardmasters music festival kicking off on Friday. Headliners Dizzee Rascal and James Arthur are among the artists set to perform.
With large crowds anticipated, the Coastguard has issued important advice for anyone heading to the coast.
A spokesperson said: “Everyone here at Newquay Coastguard Team would like to welcome you all to Newquay, Cornwall and Boardmasters. We just wanted to remind you of a few important coastal safety tips to help ensure you have an amazing weekend.”
Lifeguarded beaches
The team is urging people to swim only at RNLI‑patrolled beaches between the standard patrol hours of 10am and 6pm. “Listen to lifeguard instructions and follow their advice,” the spokesperson added. More information: https://rnli.org/water-safety/beach-safety
Whipsiderry access
The steps to Whipsiderry Beach - located between the festival site and Porth Beach — remain closed due to dangerous, unstable cliffs. The Coastguard is asking people not to attempt access, and the top of the steps has been locked for public safety.
Coastal emergencies
If someone is injured, trapped, has fallen or needs urgent help, the public should dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
Disposable barbecues
Due to exceptionally dry conditions and an increased risk of fire, the Coastguard is asking people not to light disposable barbecues on beaches or along the coastline. “Please do not light disposable barbecues on any of the beaches or along the coast,” the spokesperson said.
