Winter may be a quiet season for open-air theatre, but the Minack still has plenty to offer, particularly to local residents. It’s a time of year when there are fewer holidaymakers around and Cornish people can enjoy the county’s star attractions at their leisure, without the crowds of summer.
The Minack offers year-round free admission to visit the theatre to people living in TR19, and this year we are extending the offer during the winter months to include residents throughout the old district of Penwith, that is, people living in postcode areas TR17, TR18, TR19, TR20, TR26, and TR27. Free admission for residents will be available from Wednesday 6 November 2024 until Friday 28 February 2025. Full details on how to claim free admission can be found on the Minack website. (Free entry is for visits to the Minack only, tickets for tours, performances and other activities are not included in this offer.)
As well as exploring the extraordinary theatre and the Rowena exhibition, the Minack also has plenty to interest garden-lovers at this time of year as many species keep their colour well into autumn and some of our most spectacular exotics flower in the winter months. Autumn is also great time for spotting wildlife, so bring your binoculars and you may be lucky enough to see dolphins, porpoises, tuna seals and other sea-life as well as our resident bird population, including choughs and red kites.
And when you’ve had enough exploring, or the weather is less than perfect, enjoy panoramic views of Porthcurno bay over a delicious sandwich lunch, a proper Cornish cream tea, or a lusciously indulgent hot chocolate in our warm, welcoming cafe.
We still have a few performances at the Minack through October, especially during half term, when storyteller John Brolly will be telling the story of The Tempest in a Teacup, for families and anyone who likes a great tale and members of the British Theatre Academy and Minack Youth Theatre will get together to present a high-octane, all singing all dancing production of Footlloose: The Musical (Youth Edition). And to celebrate midwinter, we have a selection of Christmas favourites, including David Mynne’s celebrated one-man performance of A Christmas Carol, traditional music from Pendeen Silver Band, and magical tales of Winter and Wonder from the young students of the Minack Acting Academy.
From 4 November the Minack will be closed to visitors on Mondays and Tuesdays during the winter months, except in the week between Christmas and New Year.
