Charity hike completed; their hiking socks are hung out to dry!

In March, a team of friends, who met at St Columb Bowling Club, decided to raise money for three charities by completing a coastal hike, in honour of their friend Nigel Lawry who has received treatment at Royal Cornwall Hospital’s Sunrise Centre.

Friends Paul Smallman, Gary Miller, Steve Godwin, and Sim Aksvoknatf completed the 62 mile walk, from Widemouth Bay to Mawgan Porth, over three and a half days, joined by many friends and family. Importantly they were also joined by Nigel, for whom the walk was dedicated too.

“Nigel received the devastating terminal diagnosis in November 2023 of a very aggressive form of cancer and has received chemotherapy to relieve his symptoms. Nigel has been supported greatly by the Sunrise Centre and so we wanted to ‘give something back’, said Karen.

eir hike started from Widemouth Bay in Bude, after a gruelling three and a half days they completed their walk at Trevarrin Campsite, Mawgan Porth, stopping at Boscastle, Port Isaac and Porthcothan along the way.

“It was a very tough walk; the terrain was very hard, and we experienced heavy rain and even hail along the way!” Said Karen

The last day was from Porthcothan to Mawgan Porth, where Nigel, plus his children and grandchildren, joined them for the rest of the walk to Trevarrin Campsite.

“The hill is extremely steep on that section of the coastal path, so was quite a challenge, but Nigel was determined to show the walkers how much it meant to him, and he joyfully made it to the very end,” said Karen.

At Trevarrin Campsite, the group held a final fundraising afternoon, with a tombola, cream teas, cake sale, raffle and facepainting.

“Lots of fun was had by all the walkers, their friends, and families,” added Karen.

Nigel expressed his thanks to all involved in the fundraising event, “Thank you to the walkers for all they did and for all the support and love we have had as a family, thank you very much.”

In total the group raised a whopping £5426.48, shared between the Royal Cornwall’s Hospital Charity Sunrise Centre Fund, the Sunrise Appeal and the Cavernoma Society charity.
