Coastal Curiosities await at National Maritime Museum

This May half term, National Maritime Museum Cornwall (NMMC) invites families to dive into Cornwall’s coastal wonders, with hands-on activities that explore our local marine environment and how to protect it.

The museum has teamed up with Cornwall’s Rock Pool Project, which will bring the outside in with a mobile rock pool full of creatures to discover, manned from 10am - 4.30pm daily. Visitors can also explore a Seaweed Identification Stand, where they’ll discover their ecological importance, learn to recognise different species and try their hand at scientific seaweed sketching.

From Friday 30th May to Sunday 1st June, Blue Meadows brings interactive exhibits on the world of seagrass, including VR headsets, artefact discovery, and nutrient ball rolling. These fun activities will help visitors understand more about Ocean Conservation Trust’s work to protect and restore seagrass meadows across the South West, including in Falmouth.

Stuart Slade, Head of Public Programming at the museum comments: “Ocean conservation is so important and I’m delighted that this half term we have brilliant organisations making the topic fun and engaging for families. The mobile rockpool is fascinating – I have learned so much about the creatures that live along our Cornish coastlines!

“I really hope families will come and learn all about the fascinating biodiversity of Cornwall with us, and then keep the conversations going on our wonderful Cornish beaches.”

Also on display is ‘The Basket Shark’, a collaborative project between NMMC and Falmouth University. Lead artist Duncan Cameron will host Make and Take sessions

Wednesday to Friday, 12.30pm–3.30pm, inviting visitors to craft something out of willow to take home or add to the piece.

Running daily, a museum trail challenges little ones to spot five seagrass-dwelling creatures, while daily Make and Take sessions include making a seagrass crown.
