Fairtrade yarn bomb in Camborne

Felty Fanatic, Woolly Wiggler, Mohair Master, Secretive Stitcher, Raffia Rebel and Purly Princess have been busy in Camborne.

Creeping out from their hidey holes at dawn this Sunday, they yarn-bombed the town as a Fairtrade Fortnight surprise. Knitted and crocheted teapots, mugs and pots were all in the woollen mix – lending a splash of brightness and colour throughout the main streets.

BID Camborne and Camborne Yarn Bombers magicked up the idea of celebrating the town’s impressive Fairtrade credentials together and have spent the last few months clacking their needles in secret preparation.

“We’ve had dozens of bags of wool donated so our lovely creative team could beaver away this summer,” said the Purly Princess. “We wanted people in the town to wake up to the changes our knitted wonders have made, and the reaction so far has been fantastic.

“Camborne was the first town in Cornwall to achieve Fairtrade status, and we’d like to thank BID director Brian Terry, Camborne’s Fairtrade coordinator, and all the businesses who take part for their efforts in spreading and implementing the Fairtrade concept.

“This is our way of shouting loud and proud about Camborne’s Fairtrade principles and we’re delighted with the results. Even the statue of Richard Trevithick and our Cyclesauruses - installed when the Tour of Britain went through Camborne - are now sporting knitted hats!

“Come and see the yarn bomb and support Fairtrade Fortnight at the same time. That’s what we’re all about.”
