First bus drivers walk out in a row over pay

First bus drivers, engineers and back office staff, who are part of the RMT Union are taking part in a 24 hour walk out today.

Bus workers for First Group are taking part in fresh strikes today (Friday 18th) and Monday 21st in a dispute over pay.

They say they are furious that many of them are only paid just over £11 an hour and that bosses only offered a small uprate to £12 an hour.

They say this is despite the fact First Group paid out £500m to shareholders in 2021/22 and has an operating profit of £226m.

In a statement on their website they say that 'passengers should check the firms social media and website before they travel for all the latest information.'

The only services expected to operate today for First Group are:

  • Truro Park & Ride, who will provide a full service, including for tonight's festive event in Truro City Centre. The last service will leave the city at 21.15, with sites closing at 21.30.
  • Land's End Coaster - 0725 Sennen Cove to Mounts Bay Academy & Humphrey Davy School plus the 1510 afternoon return.
  • 17 - 0737 St Ives to Mounts Bay Academy & Humphrey Davy School, plus the 1509 return.

They do say they hope to operate all school and college services.

Services operated by Go Cornwall Bus, OTS, Hopleys and Travel Cornwall are not affected by this action.  There are alternative plans in place for some bus stations: https://bit.ly/3yYsku6
