Attracting thousands of locals and visitors to Truro's city centre, Cornwall's 4th 'Celebration of Culture' festival takes place on Lemon Quay and in the Hall for Cornwall between 11am and 6pm on Saturday 3rd August.
Free to attend, the event offers people a chance to explore the different cultures that exist in Cornwall's communities today.
What's in store?
The event offers live music performances, international food vendors and free and paid activities for children big and small throughout the day.
The event opens with the voices of the 200-strong Rock Choir and closes with rousing traditional Cornish trio, Jackson's Claret. The day also hosts Plymouth-based TV and radio stars, 'Real steel' - recognised as one of the world's leading steel bands and favourites of Nottinghill Carnival. Local ska and reggae favourites, 'Skata-Lkes' will be storming the stage alongside lively Cuban and Latin band 'Kewbanda' and fusion band, 'Catatumbo'- mixing infectious rhythms from the band's Venezuelan and Cornish heritages.
Arrive hungry and treat yourself to classic Caribbean, African, French or Cornish BBQ - there is a reasonably priced (adult only) bar area at the event, as well as the Hall for Cornwall cafe, where children can enjoy a quieter moment with a free 'Story Time' session, lead by local literary artists.
Funded by donations from Cornwall Community Foundation, Boardmasters Festival, Local councils and Truro BID, with partnership support from Hall for Cornwall and Cornwall council; event organisers Black Voices Cornwall aim to make as much of the day free to people as possible and have arranged for free arts and crafts and facepainting for children (and adults!) throughout the day.
Arts & Culture lead, Abi Huthinson said:
“Thanks to support of local and national funders, we are able to provide an event that brings the whole community together so that we celebrate what makes us different and what we have in common - we hope that the day gives people a chance to learn something new, enjoy local talent and have memories of a fun day out with family and friends. Cornwall is a unique place with a strong cultural history and we are really proud to showcase heritages both native and more recent in our wonderful city.”
