Penlee’s Old Lifeboat House at Penlee Point near Mousehole opened its doors for visitors on Easter Monday 21st April with more than 250 visitors descending the steps to enter the building and step back in time.
The building dates from before the First World War (1913), and remains as it was when visitors from near and far included RNLI crew from stations in Cornwall, as well as stations across England and Wales.
Whilst these Open Days are primarily put on to enable members of the public to gain an insight in to the operational conditions for RNLI volunteers in days gone by, the generosity of many visitors also makes this a good fundraising event for the charity.
Other opportunities to visit later in the year, are on Bank Holiday Monday 26 May, Sunday 29 June, Sunday 27 July, Wednesday 6 August and Bank Holiday Monday 25 August, all between 11.00 am and 3.00 pm.
At the helm welcoming visitors were Penlee Visits Team members Rod James, Trevor Thorne, John Findlay, Mike Sagar-Fenton, Jill Ryan and Colin Lawry.

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 146,000 lives.
