Two talented plumbing apprentices from Cornwall College St Austell are celebrating success at the prestigious World Skills Plumbing competition in Manchester.
Competing against the best young talent in the UK, Elliot Julian secured an impressive second place, while Dillion Newton proudly claimed third, bringing pride not only to themselves but to their college and the wider Cornwall community.
Elliot, employed by Ryan Nicholls Plumbing and Heating, reflected on his success, he said: “I’m so happy to have come second in such a tough competition. It’s been an amazing experience to test my skills at this level and represent the college and my workplace on a national stage.”
Dillion, who is also completing his apprenticeship through Ryan Nicholls Plumbing and Heating, shared his excitement: “I couldn’t be happier with my work and success, I’m so proud to have come in third place. Competing nationally has been such a rewarding challenge but the competition was tough and tested our knowledge and our abilities.”
The competition, held annually, serves as a benchmark of excellence in vocational skills. Elliot and Dillion demonstrated remarkable technical proficiency, problem-solving abilities and professionalism under pressure.
Dan Knight, curriculum area manager for construction and engineering, praised the students: “This is an incredible accomplishment for Elliot and Dillion. Their success is testament to their skill and commitment, as well as the exceptional teaching and support they receive at Cornwall College. Achievements like these not only benefit the students but also inspire their peers and strengthen the reputation of the college’s construction and engineering programmes.”
Their stellar performance highlights the high standard of training provided by Cornwall College and emphasises the value of skilled apprenticeships in today’s workforce.
For Steve Jarvis, apprenticeship programme manager at the college, “this achievement reflects the local passion and talent.”
He added: “Competing at this level and securing such prestigious awards demonstrates the strength of our apprenticeship programmes and the quality of learners we have the privilege to support.”
