On Saturday 13th of June, Redruth Town Council will be bringing the community together to celebrate the town’s historic inventor William Murdoch, in what has become the town’s biggest annual community festival- Redruth’s Murdoch Day.
The one-day free family event’s theme for this year is ‘Pride in Our Community’ to celebrate what makes everyone proud to be part of the community of Redruth. Take time to visit Murdoch House where the inventor once lived and is now heralded as a heritage site.
Murdoch Day this year promises to be extra special for two reasons, firstly in line with the town’s bid to become the UK’s first town of culture, the Town Council has allocated additional funding to this year’s festivals. The parade this year will be one of the biggest yet, with around 500 participants, to include 12 groups and local organisations and 6 local schools. As well as community involvement, it also has a great line-up of entertainment across town, with the inventive and energetic folk-rock headliners ‘Du Glas’ on Green Lane. The town will be buzzing with arts and crafts workshops, dancing, musical performances, steam road rollers and classic cars, activities in the library for young people, and much more. There will truly be something for everyone.
Secondly, the Bond Street Collective have organised the first independent ‘Redruth Pride’ event, since Cornwall Pride has had to make cut-backs and cancelled it’s annual event in the town, but they will still be involved supporting the parade. Redruth Pride and the Bond Street Collective has put a great amount of effort to run their own event as part of the day too. ‘It’s really exciting that Redruth Pride is taking place on Murdoch Day this year, the programme in Bond Street is contributing some great acts and entertainment across the town, like absolute Cornish gems The 3 Daft Monkeys, Rhys ‘Nightchurch Pianist’, and amazing singers like Scarlette Von B’, says Town Mayor Cllr Alison Biscoe.
If you are looking for a family day out, do check out the Murdoch Day programme and updates from @DiscoverRedruth to see the wide range of music, entertainment, exhibitions, workshops and more across the town and Kresen Kernow. Other independent events will also carry on into the evening at local venues; The Buttermarket, The Ladder & Redruth Wesley Chapel. Town Clerk Charlotte Williams says, ‘It’s great to see the whole town pulling together for Murdoch Day this year, the festival is really going to make Redruth the place to be this weekend.’
