Truro City Council proudly celebrated the formal investiture of Councillor Christopher Wells as the new Mayor of Truro during the Annual Mayor Making Ceremony, held on Monday, 9th June 2025 at Truro Methodist Church.

Cllr Wells was first elected to the council in 1983 and has chaired the Finance & General Purposes and Planning Committees. He was conferred the title of Honorary Freeman of the City of Truro in 2015. A former member of Carrick District Council, he also served on Cornwall Council from 2021 to 2025. In addition to being Vice-Chairman of the Kenwyn with St Allen Parochial Church Council and a member of the Hendra Community Group, he works actively with other residents’ groups and is a trustee & director of Young People Cornwall.

The Mayor stated, “As I said in my speech, I hope I can fulfil the expectations of those that are placing their trust in me. It is certainly a great honour and privilege to be able to serve the citizens of Truro as the city’s Mayor.”

Councillor Wells was proposed by Councillor Lorrie Eathorne-Gibbons and seconded by Councillor Steven Webb. The ceremony also saw the appointment of Councillor Loic Rich as Deputy Mayor, who was proposed by Cllr Pascoe and seconded by Cllr Southcombe.

Cllr Rich was born in Truro, where he lives and works. He went to Richard Lander School and Falmouth University. With a background in journalism and screenwriting, and work commissioned by a range of newspapers, magazines and film organisations, Cllr Rich has also worked in retail and catering and continues to work in music and copywriting.

In commenting on his appointment Cllr Rich Stated, “I am delighted to be able to support Cllr Wells in his role as Mayor. I have worked with Chris at both City and Unitary Councils, and know him to be a diligent, thoughtful, and responsible local councillor. He will make a great leader for our City, and chair our Council's business with fairness, fiscal responsibility and an overriding desire to serve the community of Truro.”

The ceremony, a highlight of the city’s civic calendar, brought together councillors, dignitaries, and members of the public in a traditional and dignified event that helped to mark the start of Councillor Wells’ mayoral term. The evening featured the formal robing of the Mayor, the signing of the Declaration of Acceptance of Office, and the ceremonial handover of duties.

Held in the historic setting of Truro Methodist Church, the event reflected the city’s rich civic traditions and community spirit. Attendees included past and present councillors, civic leaders from across Cornwall, and residents. The Mayor Making Ceremony not only honoured the incoming Mayor but also celebrated the values of public service and civic pride that define Truro. With the formalities now complete, Mayor Chris Wells begins his term with a clear vision and strong community support.
