With over 300 miles of coastline Cornwall, UK boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. These beaches are now accessible to more people than ever thanks to a new, innovative Accessible Beach Guide for Cornwall, launched by Access Cornwall CIC.
This ground breaking resource for individuals with disabilities and their families provides detailed information on wheelchair access, parking, facilities, activities, services, terrain, and dog regulations for beaches in the area, making it easier than ever for people with access needs to plan a beach trip.
The Accessible Beach Guide for Cornwall has been researched by the Access Cornwall team who live with disabilities themselves or care for loved ones with disabilities. It is organised by different areas of Cornwall, allowing users to easily find the best beach for their needs. The guide features a colour-coded traffic light system to indicate accessibility ratings, so users can quickly identify the most suitable beaches for their visit. In addition to beach-specific information, the guide also includes tips and resources for planning a seamless beach trip.
"We are thrilled to introduce the Accessible Beach Guide for Cornwall and take a significant step towards making Cornwall accessible for everyone," said Viki Carpenter, director of Access Cornwall.
"Thanks to amazing work by other organisations such as Cornwall Mobility, who have provided many beach chairs in Cornwall, many of our beaches are more accessible than ever. But those with disabilities and their families need to get good, clear information to plan a day out. Our goal is to empower individuals with disabilities to explore and experience the beauty of Cornwall's beaches, and we believe this guide will help to make that possible."
Access Cornwall would like to extend a special thank you to everyone who plays the National Lottery for their support in making this guide a reality. The Accessible Beach Guide for Cornwall was made possible by a grant from The National Lottery, and its impact on improving accessibility at Cornish beaches is already being felt.
"We are grateful for the support of The National Lottery, which has allowed us to create this invaluable resource for people with disabilities in Cornwall," says Viki. "We hope that the Accessible Beach Guide for Cornwall will encourage more people to visit and enjoy our beautiful beaches. The National Lottery funding has also allowed us to buy a Hippocampe wheelchair which allows wheelchair users not just to go onto the beach but into the water and this is something our volunteers have been using to help us check accessibility on some of our incredible beaches - we hope to make this available for wider loan very soon."
