A seal living in Cornwall is bringing a little sunshine to locals and visitors alike this summer with his self-named beer.
The beer, called ‘Ray of Sunshine’, has been named after Ray the grey seal, who has been living at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary since 2001.
Rescued at just three-weeks-old after a storm, it’s thought Ray suffered a head injury, which eventually led to a degree of brain damage.
Because of his unique and endearing behaviour, his rescuers realised he could never survive in the wild, so Ray was given a permanent home with the marine animal rescue charity based in Gweek, near Helston.
Today, he has almost 10,000 followers on his own dedicated social media pages and, for the first time, his fans can now purchase his beer online – no matter where they are.
To celebrate, the team at the sanctuary are hosting an online competition, where entrants have the chance to win six bottles of Ray of Sunshine, as well as a family ticket to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary this summer.
General Manager Jana Sirova says: “This summer is all about celebrating our resident seals and their stories of how they came to be at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.
“Ray’s story is one that we see all too often in our wild population, so we’re really pleased that we can provide him with a home for life.
“Ray is also a very unique seal as he exhibits very different behaviours to other seals (likely due to his injuries as a pup) and is particularly friendly and playful.
“It’s no surprise his beer has been a hit with fans, and we’re very excited to be giving people the chance to celebrate his online launch this summer.”
