Free Video Training for Local Surfers in West Cornwall

This April, Gwithian Academy of Surfing is offering free video analysis training for intermediate and advanced surfers to improve their wave riding skills.

Aimed at the dedicated wave warriors who paddle out day after day but struggle to progress, these sessions offer expert coaching and personalised feedback – and they are completely free of charge.

Head Coach Ian Gabbitas, who is recently back from a Team England Junior Squad training camp in Peniche, is leading the initiative:

“We see so many surfers down here who regularly slog it out and put in the effort but don’t get the improvement they’re after. Video analysis is a game-changer. It allows surfers to actually see what they’re doing wrong, and with some pointers from us, they can then make changes to improve.”

Why Video Analysis?

Many surfers feel they are doing fine while surfing, but video footage often reveals small errors in stance, weight distribution, or timing that is holding them back. By slowing things down and analysing technique in detail, these sessions provide personalised feedback that can shave months or even years off the learning process.

"We want surfers to see firsthand how much video analysis can improve their technique. By offering these sessions for free, we’re not only giving back to the community but also showing what’s possible with the right coaching approach," said Gabbitas.

The training sessions will take place on key dates throughout April, based around high tides and optimal filming conditions:

  • 8th April – 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM
  • 10th-15th April – 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM
  • 22nd April – 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM
  • 24th April – 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM

The coaching sessions are designed to break down technique, improve wave selection, and give surfers a clear path to progression. Spaces are limited, and those interested can book a slot by emailing ian@surfacademy.co.uk with their preferred date and contact number. Gwithian Academy are also offering a residential coaching weekend in late April and May for those who are looking for a more intensive coaching experience.
