More than 170 athletes proved Cornwall's hybrid fitness scene is thriving at a record-setting fourth WAX Warrior event, held at WAX Gym on April 26th.
Inspired by the popular HYROX race format, WAX Warrior was created by local fitness enthusiasts and WAX Gym team members, Josh Mares and Luke Watson-Read. The event challenges teams of two participants with a demanding course combining functional strength exercises and endurance running, designed to be accessible yet testing for all fitness levels.
This year's first competition saw the broadest range of participants yet, with competitors aged from just 8 years old up to 68, showcasing the event's wide appeal. Athletes from various backgrounds and abilities tackled the course side-by-side, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and support.
"Having competed in several HYROX races ourselves, Luke and I saw the potential for this style of hybrid fitness right here in Cornwall," said Josh Mares, co-organiser. "It's incredibly rewarding to see gyms across the county now incorporating WAX Warrior training into their routines. We wanted to create something challenging yet accessible, giving the local fitness community a major event to train for and be proud of. Witnessing the energy and determination from everyone – from our youngest junior warrior to our most seasoned competitors – was fantastic."
The event's success and atmosphere were significantly boosted by generous support from local sponsors. HYBRYD contributed prizes for top performers, while Mike Martin Window Systems attended and donated two Garmin Smart Watches, which were awarded to participants demonstrating outstanding effort and perseverance on the day. Congrats to Sean Walker & Jamie Baldwin - your grit didn’t go unnoticed.
Nick from Mike Martin Window Systems, also a member of WAX Gym, commented on their involvement: "As a member of WAX Gym myself, I've seen firsthand how hard people are training for this event. We're proud to support another local business. The WAX Warrior is a fantastic community event and Luke and I look forward to seeing all of the competitors on the day!" With its blend of tough competition and community spirit, WAX Warrior has established itself as a key date in the Cornish fitness calendar. Building on this year's success, WAX Gym are already preparing for the next WAX Warrior event scheduled for July 19th. Registration is now open online at waxwarrior.co.uk.
