Where Art Meets The Wave Raises Over £26,500 for Cornwall Hospice Care

On Thursday, 25th September, an extraordinary fusion of art and surf culture came to life as 43 uniquely hand-decorated belly boards were auctioned in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care, raising over £26,000. This creative initiative, aptly named "Where Art Meets The Wave," was sponsored by Rodda's and featured boards specially crafted for the project by Fyne Boat Kits of Kendal and Derek Thompson of Surf Classic Boards.

The boards were decorated by a diverse array of 43 artists, including renowned names such as top sellerKurt Jackson and Instagram favourite Steve Camps. The event, held at St Michael's Church in Newquay, drew a large crowd and concluded with the auction finale, expertly compered by Bradley Start. Kurt Jackson's board emerged as the evening's highlight, fetching the highest bid of £3,860.

The project was orchestrated by Sue Dennett, a dedicated volunteer who has been raising funds for Cornwall Hospice Care for four decades. Sue, pictured centre with Ben Statham-Wilkins, Head of Brand & Marketing Cornwall Hospice Care (right) and Alistair Whyte (left) a Trustee at Cornwall Hospice Care, previously led the successful '38 Churns Project' in 2022. Reflecting on the event, Sue remarked, "It has been a privilege to work with Cornwall's amazing artists who, like me, are passionate and proud of Cornwall's two Hospices. I am truly grateful to all who were involved in the success of the project. " Ben expressed his gratitude, stating, "Once again, we’re blown away by the generosity of our amazing Cornish community. The art on display today was of such an outstanding standard and so varied in style, it’ s been a real privilege to see it all brought together in one place. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Sue Dennett, whose energy and commitment have made this event such a success, and to the 43 artists who kindly donated their work to support the vital care we provide at St Julia ’ s Hospice in Hayle and Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell. ”

The funds raised will go a long way in providing essential support to patients and their families during their most challenging times. The event also offered a unique opportunity for some artists to engage with the public about their creations, adding a personal touch to the evening. The auction was facilitated by Lay 's Auctioneers of Penzance, ensuring a smooth and successful conclusion to this remarkable fundraiser.
