March 2026 sees the launch of AMB Rural and Commercial Ltd, providing agricultural and commercial insurance to clients across the South West and beyond. The business is focused on personal service, clear advice and insurance that reflects the realities of how rural and commercial businesses operate.

Founded by Alan Tate-Smith, AMB Rural and Commercial Ltd specialises in agricultural, rural and commercial risks, working with farmers, landowners, rural businesses, contractors and small to medium-sized enterprises. Every policy is built around the individual business, with cover structured to be practical, appropriate and fit for purpose rather than based on standard templates.

Alan grew up on a mixed farm on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and has spent his career working within the rural economy. After a brief role with NFU Mutual, he worked as a rural and commercial surveyor in Yorkshire, carrying out farm and commercial valuations, professional work, agency and auctioneering, including running a livestock market. He joined NFU Mutual as an agent in 2010 before moving to Devon in 2018, where he has worked as a specialist agricultural insurance broker ever since.

Now based near Honiton, Devon, Alan lives with his wife and three children - whose initials inspired the name of the business. AMB Rural and Commercial Ltd was established to create a long-term, independent brokerage built around how clients want to be advised and supported.

AMB Rural and Commercial Ltd works on a face-to-face basis wherever possible, taking time to understand each client’s people, assets and operations. Clients deal directly with an experienced broker, with on-site visits where appropriate and insurance built around a clear understanding of the risks involved.

The business operates on a straightforward set of principles: meeting clients in person wherever possible, tailoring insurance to the individual business, and maintaining clear, consistent communication. Advice is led by experience and understanding, not sales targets.
