Cornish Pirates Launch Emergency Fundraiser After Devastating Storm Goretti Damage

Damage to the Cornish Pirates Rugby Club Grandstand during Storm Goretti

The Cornish Pirates Rugby Club has launched a public fundraising appeal to help recover from severe damage caused by Storm Goretti at the club’s home ground, The Mennaye, in Penzance.

On 8 January 2026, Storm Goretti brought destructive winds and heavy weather across Cornwall, leaving a trail of disruption and damage. The Mennaye’s main grandstand suffered significant structural harm, with sections of the roof blown off and holes torn through the covering.

While insurance will cover a large portion of the insured structural losses, there remains substantial uninsured costs associated with repairs, relocation of matches, lost match-day revenues, and replacement of club equipment. In addition, subsequent storms, including Storm Ingrid, have compounded the club’s challenges by affecting other stands, electrics, and the scoreboard.

Sally Pettipher, Chief Executive of Cornish Pirates, said:

“The recent storms have left our beloved club in a tough spot. We are reaching out to our community for support during this critical time. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, can help us rebuild and continue providing the rugby experience our community and supporters love.”

With the team temporarily unable to play at its home ground, home fixtures have been relocated to nearby venues as the club works to secure, repair, and restore the stadium.

The GoFundMe campaign, “Please donate to help Cornish Pirates after Storm Goretti,” invites supporters of the club, local community members, and rugby fans nationwide to contribute towards the recovery effort.
