The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is excited to announce the launch of Seal School, a brand-new educational loan-box scheme designed to bring the magic of the Sanctuary directly into classrooms and home education settings across the TR12 area.
For over 50 years, the Sanctuary has rescued, rehabilitated, and released seal pups in need. Now, thanks to generous funding from the Duke of Cornwall Marine Environment Fund via the Cornwall Community Foundation, local primary school aged children can discover the incredible stories of these rescued seal pups without even leaving their school setting.
Seal School loan boxes are packed with books, interactive resources, hands-on activities, and curriculum-linked learning materials that help pupils explore the world of seals and the challenges they face in the wild.
From understanding marine pollution to discovering how the Sanctuary cares for injured pups, each box gives children the chance to learn through real-life conservation stories.
Designed to support teachers in delivering engaging, meaningful lessons, Seal School helps spark curiosity, encourage environmental awareness, and empower young people to make a positive difference to the natural world.
A new way to protect our oceans - starting in the classroom
“We’re thrilled to bring Seal School to local schools,” said Rebecca Langston, Education supervisor at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. “Thanks to the support of the Duke of Cornwall Marine Environment Fund and Cornwall Community Foundation, we can help children learn about the importance of protecting our oceans and the incredible animals that depend on them. These loan boxes are designed to make conservation accessible, exciting, and relevant to pupils’ everyday lives.”
General manager Sarah Pegg agrees “With transport costs rising and school budgets under increasing pressure, we're proud to bring the Cornish Seal Sanctuary straight into the classroom. We believe every child deserves to hear the story and mission of the sanctuary; and these boxes are our way of making that possible.
We hope they spark a sense of wonder, and inspire children to come and meet the seals in person and discover more about our conservation work for themselves.”
Seal School will initially be available to primary schools within the TR12 postcode, with plans for future growth.
In addition to the loan boxes, the Sanctuary’s Education Team will be offering 12 free outreach sessions to schools, home educators, community groups, and other community-based organisations within TR12.
These sessions involve a Sanctuary team member visiting the setting and bringing the Sanctuary experience to life! Giving children hands-on opportunities to learn about marine wildlife and ocean conservation directly from Sanctuary educators.
