Life-changing research at RCHT helps local man to beat cancer and return to an active, adventurous life

Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) is celebrating the remarkable recovery of Rod Richardson, a 77‑year‑old grandfather from St Austell, whose life has been transformed thanks to cutting-edge haematology research.

Father of two and grandfather of five, Rod is known for keeping busy, and staying active. Today, he is enjoying life to the full, renovating his home, and even cycling across Europe. These are achievements he feels would not have been possible without the exceptional care of Dr David Tucker and the Haematology Research Team at RCHT.

Rod speaks passionately about the support he received during his treatment, describing the team as “brilliant” and crediting them with going “above and beyond” in every aspect of his care.

He says he actually looks forward to attending his appointments. During the COVID‑19 pandemic, the team often provided his only face‑to‑face interaction.
Their kindness, professionalism, and compassion has left a lasting impact.

Rod said “I’m indebted to the team. What they’ve done has allowed me to live an active life again. I even enjoy coming to my appointments. I consider the Haematology department to be a Centre of Excellence ”

After being offered a place on a clinical trial at RCHT, Rod experienced an extraordinary response to the trial treatment. In just four weeks, following only four doses, he saw a dramatic improvement in his condition and his cancer, which was at one stage thought to be incurable, soon declared as being in remission.

The result was life-changing, giving him the opportunity to return to the active lifestyle he loves.

Following his treatment, Rod embraced rehabilitation with determination. He joined a gym, worked with a personal trainer to rebuild strength, and soon found himself tackling adventures many half his age would envy. He has since cycled solo through France and Spain and carried out physical voluntary work for a local tree nursery. He continues to enjoy a positive, energetic approach to life which is supported by regular meditation and a commitment to staying active.

Rod now wants to share his story to inspire others and highlight the impact research can. He hopes that by speaking out, others facing uncertainty will see that there is always hope, and that innovative treatments made possible through research at RCHT can offer remarkable opportunities.
