Newquay BID Launches Phase Two of Street Art Trail – “The Door Art Tour”**

Newquay BID to offer £1000 cash prize for best doorway art.

Newquay BID are calling on local artists to come to Newquay and paint a mural on a High Street door to compete for a £1000 cash prize.

Newquay BID is proud to announce Phase Two of the highly successful Newquay Street Art Walking Tour, which has been developing over the past few years across Newquay.

The existing large-scale murals have already created significant interest on social media and are loved by locals and visitors alike. While Newquay BID continues to seek funding to deliver further major wall murals, the next chapter of the project is ready to begin.

Introducing Phase Two: The Door Art Tour

We are now launching The Door Art Tour — an exciting competition that will create a new, smaller-scale trail running between the town’s existing landmark murals.

Newquay BID is seeking a minimum of 20 town centre businesses willing to volunteer a door that an artist can transform into a unique piece of art. These smaller murals will connect different parts of the high street, encouraging visitors to explore more of the town centre while adding colour, creativity and vibrancy.

How It Works

  1. Businesses volunteer a suitable door and secure landlord/building owner permission.
  2. Local artists apply to take part.
  3. Artists are matched with participating businesses.
  4. Artists and door owners agree the final concept collaboratively.
  5. All murals must be completed and photographed by 31st March.

All completed murals will be featured on the Love Newquay website and across social media, where the public will be invited to vote for their favourite design.

£1,000 Prize

The artist behind the winning door mural will receive a £1,000 cash prize.

Participating businesses are also encouraged, where possible, to support their artist with small gestures such as refreshments or vouchers  helping to create a strong community feel around the project.

Artistic Freedom at the Heart of the Project

A key principle of The Door Art Tour is creative freedom.

While artwork inspired by Newquay’s coastline, surf culture, heritage and independent spirit is welcomed, artists will be given genuine artistic licence. We want creativity to flourish and are keen to avoid over-prescribing themes or restricting ideas.

The success of the project depends on artists feeling inspired rather than constrained. Participating businesses will therefore be asked to collaborate positively and avoid unnecessary limitations, ensuring the final pieces feel authentic to the artist’s style while remaining suitable for a public-facing town centre setting.

How Artists Can Apply

Artists interested in taking part should email:

mark.warren@newquaybid.co.uk

Applications must include:

  1. Name and contact details
  2. One image of existing work (artist’s choice)
  3. A short ten-word summary describing what they would want their doorway to be

This simple application process is designed to keep the project open, accessible and exciting for artists of all styles and backgrounds.

Key Dates

  1. Applications Open: Immediately
  2. Artist & Door Registrations Close: 15th March
  3. Murals Completed & Photographed By: 31st March
  4. Public Voting Opens: 1st April
  5. Winner Announced: Mid-April

Building a More Vibrant High Street

The Door Art Tour represents another step in strengthening Newquay’s creative identity. By increasing the volume of public art — both large and small — the initiative will:

  1. Encourage greater footfall across the town centre
  2. Support and showcase local artistic talent
  3. Generate social media engagement
  4. Add colour and character to the high street
  5. Create a stronger sense of pride and place

Newquay’s street art journey is continuing to evolve — and this next phase invites businesses, artists and the public to be part of it.
