Truro Farmers Market has been awarded £25,000 through Airbnb’s “Best of British” fund, recognising its important role in championing local food, community connection, and authentic Cornish experiences.
The national £1 million fund was launched to support communities and local businesses in transforming local traditions into visitor experiences and boosting tourism across the UK.
Held twice weekly on Lemon Quay, Truro Farmers Market is a vibrant part of the city centre, bringing together local producers, artisans and visitors in a welcoming and sociable setting. The market runs every Wednesday and Saturday from 9am to 4pm.
The funding will support the development of new experiences at the market, helping to showcase Cornwall’s rich food culture while enhancing what is already a much-loved destination for both residents and visitors.
By building on its strong local roots, the project aims to create a more immersive and engaging experience celebrating the stories behind the produce, the people who create it, and the unique character of Truro.
Scott Hall, Chairman of Truro Farmers Market, said:
“This is a huge moment for the market and for all of the traders who make it what it is. We’ve always been proud of the quality, passion and community behind Truro Farmers Market, and this funding gives us the opportunity to build on that in a really exciting way.
It allows us to create something that not only supports our producers but also gives visitors a deeper connection to Cornwall’s food and the people behind it. We’re really looking forward to seeing how this develops over the coming months.”
Abi Steel, Visit Truro Manager, said:
“We’re seeing two really strong trends in visitor behaviour at the moment – people are actively looking for authentic, memorable experiences, and there’s a growing appetite for high-quality local food and drink.
This funding is a fantastic opportunity to bring those two things together. It will help create something genuinely special for Truro – an experience that not only enhances the Farmers Market, but also encourages more people to spend time in the city and explore everything our high street has to offer.”
The initiative is expected to help increase visitor footfall, supporting not only the market’s traders but also surrounding independent businesses, cafés and retailers.
Truro continues to position itself as a welcoming and vibrant destination, with the Farmers Market playing a key role in bringing the community together and celebrating the best of Cornwall’s local produce.
