West of England Steam Engine Society Celebrates 70 Years

Against the odds, a steam engine society based at the tip of the country has defied expectations and reached a remarkable milestone.

In 2025, the West of England Steam Engine Society marks 70 years since its founding, proudly standing as one of the longest-running steam events in the UK.

While other preservation societies across the country have struggled in recent years—many unable to continue due to rising costs—the West of England Steam Engine Society has weathered its share of challenges. Foot & Mouth, COVID, and even Storm Betty have all tested its resilience, yet last year’s steam rally welcomed record-breaking crowds through the gates.

This year’s event, taking place 15th–17th August at Stithians Showground, promises the usual lively mix of vintage vehicles, crafts and models, trade stalls, and children’s entertainment. The surrounding countryside hosts demonstrations of traditional rural life, including thatching, beekeeping, and blacksmithing.

Throughout the weekend, steam engines will navigate the showground’s roadways, offering trailer rides by donation in support of the charity Man Down Cornwall. Attendees can also witness engines in action, carrying out the work they were built to do—threshing, baling, and wood sawing.

As evening falls, the Showmans engines light up the funfair, creating an unforgettable night-time spectacle. Visitors are invited to soak it all in with a drink from the bar and entertainment marquee.

The Society welcomes all to be part of this landmark celebration, shared in the only way the steam community knows how—with heart, history, and plenty of horsepower.
