Four-year-old loyalty card is boosting the Camborne economy

An estimated spend of at least £140,000 has been generated in the four years since BID Camborne introduced a loyalty card scheme to encourage shopping in the town.

The figure equates to the 70,000 transactions and 5000 monthly competition entries recorded by the BID team. A further £11,000 has also gone straight back to the town in monthly gift voucher prizes worth £225.

There are ten stamps on a card, and a minimum of £2 needs to be spent to get one stamp. When ten stamps are collected, the card is entered into monthly draw to win prizes of £100, £75 and £50. Shoppers can enter as many cards as they wish.

Chantelle Roberts, BID Camborne’s social media manager and project support officer, says business owners tell her the loyalty card has proved a very good way of encouraging local shopping.

“I’ve spoken to business owners across the town centre this week and all of them agree it’s working very well,” she said.

“Two of the businesses, Minidu and Glitter Bug have only recently opened their new shops in Trelowarren Street.

“Minidu, run by Savannah Howells, specialises in hippi style kids’ clothing, cushions, jewellery and cards and Glitter Bug, run by Tamsyn Matthews, is a gift shop that sells handmade crafts, glitter glasses and personalised items.

“Tamsyn originally had a unit at Trevithick market but wanted to be on the high street and Savannah’s mum runs Xanadu, next door to Minidu. Both owners have experience of Camborne trading and were very keen to become part of the card’s shopping network."

Other businesses include CocoBean Cornwall, run by Bev Fitzgerald-Bevington, that offers authentic African/Caribbean food to sit-in and takeaway, and Creations of Decorations, run by Kerry Whiting, that sells or rents personalised balloons and party supplies.

“We launched the loyalty card in April 2022 and, as our figures show, it’s successfully boosting the local economy,” said Anna Pascoe, BID Camborne manager.

“The Camborne community is warm, welcoming and mutually supportive and, with this card, there is even more of an incentive for people to shop local.”

The cards are available from participating Camborne businesses.
