A NEW audiology service is starting for people in and around Newquay.
The Specsavers hearing hub returns to the town for the first time since the Covid-19 lockdown, when restrictions on social distancing and travel caused the service to close.
Since then, people with audiology issues, including hearing aid problems and wax removal needs, had to travel to Truro and St Austell.
The delay in re-establishing the service has been due to a lack of appropriate sites in the area, but now part of the Wax Gym building at Newquay Sports Centre has been secured.
The Tretherras Road site already houses a variety of therapy outlets and has a large car park that provides free spaces for visitors, including fully accessible spaces for those who need them.
Kerry Pipe, a registered Hearing Aid Dispenser with more than 10 years’ experience, is the clinical lead who will be running the new service when it opens on Tuesday 5 May.
She says: ‘We’re delighted to announce the launch of the hearing hub. This is a really significant service for the people of Newquay.
‘I’ve lived and worked in Newquay for most of my life, so I understand how important a purpose-made service like this will be for meeting the needs of residents.
‘Opening our service here means people won’t have to travel to Truro or St Austell. For a while now, people have been asking when we’re going back to Newquay, so that’s been the driving force behind the decision.
‘The service will have a sound-treated room, and we have a dedicated administration team who will take bookings.
‘We’ll provide thorough, professional hearing services using the most up-to-date equipment, as well as offering wax removal and the very latest hearing aids.’
The hub will be open on Tuesdays to begin with, increasing to Tuesdays and Thursdays when the service is fully operational.
Nicola Simmons, Specsavers audiology director for Mid Cornwall, says: ‘Everyone’s hearing changes over time – it’s perfectly normal – so we know just how important it is to provide ear-health services.
‘If anyone thinks they may need a bit of help to recover the sounds that they’ve been missing, it all starts with a hearing check. If someone needs a hearing aid, the audiologist can fit them and adjust them in lots of different ways.
‘Everyone’s hearing is different and it’s important to tailor hearing aids so that they meet the person’s needs perfectly. We also provide an aftercare package to make sure people are fully supported afterwards.’
